This course is an introduction to the classification, morphology, physiology, genetics of microorganisms such as bacteria, algae, fungi, protozoans. This course involves the study of the roles of microorganisms in the environment and their applications in the industry, including medicine. Viruses, viroids and prion particles will also be introduced.

The laboratory course provides the students with practical experience in the study of microorganisms. Experiments are designed to include techniques for the identification of microorganisms based on their physical (e.g. colony and cellular morphology), and physiological characteristics (e.g. growth patterns, antibiotic resistances). Students will be trained in the use of aseptic techniques for basic microbial application. These applications include procedures for control of microbial growth, screening for microbial contamination of food and water samples and the use of microorganisms for product development in the industry.
